Within the Carrara district alone there are about 100 opencast quarries scattered around the mountains which rise to form a semi-circle behind the town. This is the north-western range of the Apuan Alps. Extraction is carried out over a total area of 2000 ha. cut by three deep valleys running parallel to one another in a north-easterly to southwesterly direction, corresponding to the three principal excavations basins of Carrara. Goingfrom west to east we find: The Torano Basin |
| (in which we may also include the small basin of Pescina-Boccaglia), the Miseglia Basin and finally the Colonnata Basin; all these names come from the names ojf three small mountain villages located within them. |
